Where Candy, Coffee, and Community Come Together

Step inside Quincy Provisions and you’ll quickly realize this is more than a shop — it’s an experience. Under one welcoming roof, co-owners Amy Carey and Susan Ushakoff have brought together three beloved businesses: Carey Candy Co., Bell Lane Baked Goods, and Brew Haha. From gourmet coffee and fresh-baked treats to nostalgic candies that spark childhood memories, Quincy Provisions has become a true cornerstone of downtown Quincy.

From Chocolate Roses to a Community Hub

Amy’s entrepreneurial journey began with something simple and heartfelt: handmade chocolate roses for a friend’s wedding. When requests kept rolling in, her husband posed a question that changed everything — “Why don’t you open a candy shop?” Carey Candy Co. was born, growing from one location to three before ultimately finding its home in Quincy.

Susan’s path came from a different direction. After retiring from a career in hospitality in Monterey, she relocated to Quincy and began baking out of her home under a cottage food license. Her baked goods quickly became a favorite — including for Amy, who realized that Susan’s talents deserved a proper kitchen. With space already available, the partnership was a natural fit. Together, they added Bell Lane Baked Goods and Brew Haha, rounding out the shop with exceptional pastries and gourmet coffee drinks.

The result? Quincy Provisions…a place where craftsmanship, collaboration, and creativity thrive.

What They Love Most

Susan loves the creativity of baking, the freedom to experiment and perfect flavors. Amy enjoys the challenge of being a business owner in a small community, where relationships matter and reputation is everything. What they share most, though, is a love for helping people celebrate life’s moments — from everyday treats to weddings and special occasions.

That care shows in every detail. They’re known for never saying no when the community needs help, for mentoring employees so they leave with real, transferable skills, and for creating a space that’s full of personality — including a Three Stooges tribute wall right next to the Jelly Belly corner.

Moments That Matter

Some of their proudest moments come from being part of customers’ most meaningful days. Weddings, especially, stand out — knowing their baked goods and confections are part of memories people will carry forever.

Customers keep coming back for the consistency, quality, and warmth, along with fan favorites like the savory Plumas Roll and the sweet Caramel Sea Salt Flats.

Behind the Counter

Running a business like this isn’t easy — and Amy and Susan are very honest about that. One of them is always present, always moving, always engaged. They believe the owner sets the tone, even in the smallest moments. A smile or a kind word can change a customer’s entire day — and they take that responsibility seriously.

And of course, there’s humor along the way. One memorable moment involved a customer returning a drink after discovering what they thought was a rubber band — which turned out to be a partially cooked pasta stir stick. Problem solved, story forever remembered.

Rooted in Community

For Amy and Susan, being part of Plumas County means showing up when it matters most. During wildfire events, Quincy Provisions served as a World Central Kitchen meeting place, providing food, WiFi, restrooms, and workspace for first responders, fire victims, and emergency crews. When resources were scarce, their doors stayed open.

They give back whenever they can — sponsoring local plays, supporting events, and organizing food gift cards for those in need. And they’ll never forget how the community supported them in return, especially during the early days of COVID, when curbside orders (and a surge of Easter basket purchases) helped keep the business afloat.

Looking Ahead

Amy and Susan are always dreaming up what’s next — from refining what they do best to possibly hosting a White Party someday. Their invitation to first-time visitors is simple and enthusiastic:

“Come on in! We have the most unique and popular candy in town, and there’s always something fresh baked and brewed.”

They love Plumas County for its walkable downtown, clean air, natural beauty, lack of traffic, and the peaceful rhythm of mountain-town life…qualities that make shopping local here something truly special.
